Ah, the eternal debate of New York. Similar to the Rams/Dodgers situation of LA or Atletico/Real rivalry of Madrid, this is a situation that can divide a city. Even though Nets are located directly in Brooklyn, you’d be surprised how many Brooklyn residents continue to cheer for the Knicks. If you are a basketball fan and are moving to Brooklyn, you should definitely consider choosing who you will back in the playoffs. It will happen, people, it has to eventually, it’s been too long. New York Basketball fans made their pick a long time ago, and you as a newcomer, should too. Make sure you pack all your belongings before getting here and dive into these options:
Knicks – New York Basketball Powerhouse
And with the first pick, we go fo the New York Knicks. This is a phrase Knicks fans do not get a chance to hear too often. I guess it even hurts right now talking about picks considering the fairly recent Porzingis situation. Sorry guys, I don’t get it either. Even though they are not in a good place right now, nor were they since the history of time, their fan base in New York still remains strong.
You could make a case that these people just love being disappointed every year. Maybe that’s the main reason they still cheer every single week. I don’t think that’s it. The MSG still remains close to full no matter which teams shows up to question the mighty Knickerbockers and their team. One thing you can say about Knicks fans is that they are loyal. As I already mentioned, they do not have a lot of reasons to be though, but they still are. Why is that? A deeper analysis of what makes the Knicks special will lead us to answers.
Founded in 1946, the history of the New York Basketball team leaves a lot to be desired. The last time Knicks won a championship was a long time ago. The two titles they have were back in 1970 and 1973 and since then, they have been abstinent of success. It wasn’t because of the lack of stars they had. The likes of Patrick Ewing, Isaiah Thomas, and Carmelo Anthony were just a few that graced the floor of the world-renowned MSG. They even had Phil Jackson as their GM for a while. What was lacking you ask? Is there a specific thing that took them out of the title picture for so many years? Probably not. Just a cluster of bad decisions and poor luck that you can write a 1000 pages essay on.
After the Porzingis trade, the Knicks have taken a position they are accustomed to. Tanking. For the layman tanking is a strategy where you try to win the least amount of games as possible. Why? Because next year, you hope to be in the lottery and get the top prospect to come out of the draft. That’s pretty much it. Not really much to write about. In regards to their roster, they have a couple of young guys and vets who can at least try to win a couple of games. But then again, what’s the point? It’s not their goal.
Now, this might be interesting. Due to their tanking strategy, the Knicks are in a great position for next season. Even if we ignore the fact that they might end up with the best young guy out there, it’s still all good. The main reason why is the upcoming summer. With the likes of Kawhi, Kyrie, Kemba, and Cousins available when the trades open up, the Knicks are in a great position. When they all move in together, it might get crazy. Combining the top pick of the draft with these assets might be the winning combo. We’ll see, but the future seems bright.
Nets – New York Basketball rookies (kinda)
If you thought the Knicks lack in history, check out these guys. Apart from the fact that Jay Z owns a part of the team and their relocation from NJ, there’s not much to mention. If you are looking to go to the opposite direction, check out this NJ Moving Guide. Similar to their neighbors and bitter rivals, the Nets have been plagued by poor management and plain bad luck. The lack of any significant star power and winning tradition did not help either.
Nonetheless, the Barclays Center still remains frequently visited by Brooklyn locals. There still remains a hope that better days are to come. Perhaps it’s the same thing that the Knicks fans have. Who knows? The only thing that is certain is that with their new branding, they remain one of the best looking teams in the league. Every year their Jersey ranks top 3 in the NBA. Aside from their consecutive eastern conference championships back in 2001 and 2002, the Nets really lack in the History section. If you are looking for significant players that were a part of the Nets, you got the wrong team. If we ignore the likes of Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, Julius Erving, and Richard Jefferson, they really don’t have much. Yeah, even Jefferson made that list. I guess it makes sense when Brook Lopez is the third player on your most minutes list.
Currently, the Nets aren’t looking too bad. Residing on the verge of playoffs with an above 500 record in the rising eastern conference is a good situation. All things considered. With young guys such as D’Angelo Russell, Jarrett Allen, and Spencer Dinwiddie the current season is going well above expected. Joe Harris even won the 3pt competition, and D’Angelo made the all-star team. Truth be told, no one ever expected them to be even relevant this year. I guess they proved everyone wrong. They certainly do not lack in excitement area either, check out this triple-OT clash with the Cavs.
Who knows honestly. With such young assets, they might even compete in a few years. I know it sounds ludicrous right now, but you never know. Teams have been able to do way more with way less. The future remains to be seen, but with an up and coming core of guys that have great chemistry, anything can happen. Landing a free agent would definitely help them go for a stronger push in the playoffs, but due to the above-mentioned history, that’s probably going to be a problem. It remains to be seen, but they might develop a great thing in the next couple of years. New York Basketball has a strong future.
No matter which option you choose in the end, you really can not go wrong. With all their bad sides and lack of success, the New York Basketball teams really do offer great things. Whether you choose to wear orange, or black on your moving day, know that you picked the right option. And please respect the other option as well, it’s not their fault they suck.
